When Entertainment Mirrors Reality
When we find out a bat in China infects a pig that is sold in a street market starting a chain of events that is the cause of a catastrophic pandemic, the similarities to what is unfolding this year with COVID-19 the Coronavirus, puts a surreal spin on the phrase: “industrial disease.”
This is a cerebral movie. Critics have complained about having too many characters, but these characters serve as illustration, the main character is the pandemic, that is explored in non sensationalistic but none the less in a very compelling way. The scariest thing about the movie is its realism. Yes, this is what really would happen if there were a pandemic. Not everyone would die, there would be no flashy helicopter drama, but for the many who have scoffed at preppers, the R Not Factor (RO) is quite apropos for those who are not prepared – who are not taking this threat today seriously & in denial to the end. For them it would not be a pleasant experience.
Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow), a married Minneapolis executive, flies to Hong Kong on business. Upon her return, she’s gripped with flu-like symptoms, has a seizure in her kitchen, and dies. Her husband, Mitch (Matt Damon), is in shock. Meantime, the Center for Disease Control is flooded with calls from around the country — and the globe; whatever killed Beth is killing plenty of other people, too. Meanwhile, a blogger (Jude Law) is convinced of a government conspiracy that manufactured the bioweapon and hypes alternative theories, while others are up in arms and start looting. It’s up to Dr. Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) and his investigators, as well as the collective efforts of other scientists and doctors from around the world, to identify the agent and find a cure before the planet loses millions more.

Of coarse the hero’s of Contagion is a vaccine, the CDC & the pharmaceutical industry in epic Hegelian dialectic fashion.
